The Reef Octopus Needle Wheel Skimmer models are among the most popular in the catalog.  A needle wheel clears the detritus from a salt water tank by using a small valve to inject the air bubbles into the main skimmer chamber.  Unlike the normal bubblers that you see in aquariums, the needle takes in water in order to chop up the air and produce a mist rather than coarse bubbles.  This increases the number of bubbles that can be prudiced inside the skimmer, which means there is more surface area of thsoe bubbles for waste to attach to and be transported to the collection cup. The featured piece of the self cleaning system is the SRO Dual Blade Auto Neck Cleaning Device. Working in much the same way as a car’s windshield wiper does, this device uses a low RPM, high torque motor, squeegees, wiper mount, and lid with mounting clamps.

Simply plug the unit into any type of timer or aquarium controller and set it to turn on for a few minutes 4 to 6 times per day. This will ensure the neck walls of the skimmer remain free of gunk and crud, and reduce your skimmer cleaning duties to one good cleaning every couple of weeks.
